TED: Mental peanut butter

TED: Mental peanut butter
IPHONE APPS REVIEW

Ideas worth spreading.  Peanut butter.  Boysenberry jam.  Cream cheese…

TED talks are a pair of jumper leads hooked up to your cerebral cortex.  Actually, that’d just hurt, and probably kill you.  How about chicken soup for the gray matter?  Hmmm.  I don’t know if neural salmonella exists, but why risk it.  I think I’ll stop torturing metaphors into submission and will resign myself to simply saying this…TED rocks.

And TED on the iPhone?

Penultimate: So simple a five year old could use it

Penultimate: So simple a five year old could use it
IPAD APPS REVIEW

I hate clichés.  ‘At the end of the day’ who doesn’t?  But seriously, clichés give me the metaphorical runs.  Why?  They’re so damned easy to fall into.  One moment of inattention and a “So in a nutshell…” blindsides your summarizing paragraph.  Then it’s all over…red rover.

How does one combat a cliché like, “It’s so simple a five year old could use it”?

Test it.  Get a real five year old to have a go at Penultimate to see if it really is that easy to use.

Take it away, Luca!

Star Walk: Stargazing in style

Star Walk: Stargazing in style
IPAD APPS REVIEW

I’ve always been a bit of a stargazer.  It comes from growing up on a farm in 'Hicksville', New Zealand…no city lights around to fuzz out your view of the heavens.  Part of the reason why I live in the hills now that I think of it.  I can’t stand looking up and seeing black velvet nothingness…creeps me out.

And now, with Star Walk, I can see what all that shiny stuff up there is called, and the info’s presented to me in such a sexy way.  When it comes to beautiful applications, Star Walk is what I’m talking about.

Issuu: The Edwin wears Prada.
WEB APPS REVIEW

That’s it, I’m dyeing my hair platinum, getting a bowl cut and a pair of flies eyes sunglasses…and it’s nothing but Prada for me from now on.  Yes, I’m a magazine editor…more or less.

Power to the popular press!  Issuu enables you to create and publish your own e-zine.  Look out for Ed Vogue coming to a virtual bookshelf near you.

DivX Only: For the discerning movie junky

DivX Only: For the discerning movie junky
WEB APPS REVIEW

My quest for the great movie resource in the ether continues.  And my virtual trawling has netted DivX Only, a much more promising alternative to something like Stagevu.

Is it the be all and end all for my movie junky proclivities?  It did look like it could be…at first.

iWatch: I watch...I like.

iWatch: I watch...I like.
IPAD APPS REVIEW

Streaming video, that’s where the iPad comes into it’s own, the sexy wee beastie.  Here I am, sitting on my deck in the shade of a tree on a sunny afternoon, using iWatch to enjoy an illustrated interpretation of Tim Burton’s original ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ poem.

This is a very nice moment indeed.

Stagevu: That will do, pig.

Stagevu: That will do, pig.
WEB APPS REVIEW

There are two things that I’m trying to phase out of my life.  One is watching appointment television and the other is going to the DVD shop, which for me is a one hour round trip.  The appointment viewing TV thing has been easy to knock on the head.  TV on demand is a beautiful thing.  But movies have been a trickier one.

Enter, Stagevu, left.  A site brim full of HD movies itching to be streamed or downloaded.
